Many of my friends refuse to believe that the stories from veteran tech support workers are true. That large a percentage of the American population couldn't be that stupid. One of my coworkers reminded me of a number of things that one in five Americans believe. For those of you who have ever doubted our tech support stories:

One in five Americans cannot locate the United States on a map.

One in five Americans do not know what country the US declared its independence from. (source: Gallup)

One in five Americans believes in Witches. (Gallup) The pagan population in the country just isn't high enough to account for that one- most of those are probably the crazy scary fundies who believe that witchcraft entails late nights with Dungeons and Dragons, drugs, and blood sacrifice.

One in five Americans believes that the sun revolves around the earth. (Northwestern University)

Ladies and gentleman of my friends list, meet the fine people who call tech support. And we wonder why so many refuse to believe that desktop computers need power to function.
