One of my coworkers developed an interest in paganism. Not having any previous experience with the books in that genre, she purchased an Edain McCoy book.
Once we'd explained to her why this is a very bad idea, we established that it was time to go shopping for good books. I spent today on an expedition to Powell's with Crystal, Kandace, Dawna, Tristan, and Robb. We found a few things for her, and gave her a list of less common things which she should order in. She initially looked quite surprised at how much of the stack we handed her was history, anthropology, or similar things. It has been explained to her that she'll want a firm background in these things before attempting to look at the other pretty books she wanted. We at least want her to be able to tell which authors are completely bullshitting their history.
While there, we did do a fair deal of wandering around the gold room. The gold room, for non-Portland locals, contains fiction. If anyone here has read the back of a Christian romance novel, they know how sad the descriptions on the back tend to be. While at Powell's, we found Wiccan romance novels. If the backs of the books are any indication, they're proof that pagans can in fact be just as annoying as Christians.
We debated getting one just to see if it really was as bad as it looked.
